The motto for the "International Year of Languages" is "Languages matter." Languages DO matter and play a strategic role in  eradicating extreme poverty, achieving education for all (EFA), and combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. They are also key factors in promoting sustainable development through local and indigenous knowledge.

Furthermore, linguistic diversity is closely linked with cultural diversity and is essential for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and promoting diverse cultural expressions. We are thus pleased to join the Royal Institute and other partner organizations in inviting your participation in this exciting and timely conference.

Sincerely yours,
Dr. Sheldon Shaeffer
